From New York to the Jungle: Leah & Alex's Lifestyle Couple Session in Akumal

Not every great session happens inside a luxury resort. Sometimes the best images come from stepping outside the gates, following the coastline, pushing through the jungle, and discovering that the real magic was just beyond the manicured path all along. That's exactly what happened with Leah and Alex, and it's a session I'll be telling people about for a long time.
The Couple
Leah and Alex made the trip down from New York, staying at Secrets Akumal Resort and Spa on Mexico's Riviera Maya. They came looking for sun, sea, and a photographer who could capture something real about who they are together. What they didn't know yet was that we'd end up wandering a public beach, discovering an abandoned wooden boat half-swallowed by the shore, and weaving through a stretch of Akumal jungle that felt completely untouched.
They have a calm, grounded energy, the kind that doesn't need constant movement or noise to feel alive. Together they move slowly, deliberately, completely at ease. As a couple, they're the kind that doesn't need to perform for a camera. They just need a little space and a reason to keep walking.
Why American Couples Are Choosing the Riviera Maya for Their Photo Sessions
Here's something worth saying directly, because it matters for anyone reading this from back home in the States: you don't need to wait until your wedding day to get incredible photos taken in Mexico.
More and more couples from New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, and cities all across the U.S. are arriving at hotels like Secrets Akumal, Fairmont Mayakoba, Conrad Tulum, and Rosewood Mayakoba and realizing mid-trip that they want to document this. The light here is different. The setting is different. And having a lifestyle photographer meet you at your hotel, no logistics, no stress, just a few hours walking through one of the most beautiful places on earth, is one of the best decisions you can make on a Mexican vacation.
The Riviera Maya, from Cancún and Playa del Carmen all the way down through Akumal, Tulum, and beyond, is full of world-class photography locations. And Akumal in particular is one that I think is still underrated. The beach is quieter than Playa del Carmen, the water is extraordinary, and the surrounding jungle gives you a rawness and texture that you simply don't get at more developed spots.
The Setting: Akumal's Public Beach
Secrets Akumal is an all-inclusive resort with beautiful grounds and direct beach access, and it's an excellent home base for a photography session in the area. One of the best-kept secrets about Akumal, and I mean the town and beach itself, is that the public beach is completely accessible, completely photogenic, and completely free of vendor fees or restrictions for photographers and their clients.
That matters. It means that as a guest at Secrets Akumal or any nearby property, you can book a photographer, walk out to the beach, and spend a couple of hours exploring without any logistical headaches. No permits, no fees, no limitations. Just the Caribbean, the sand, and whatever we find along the way.
And in Akumal, what you find along the way can be extraordinary.
The Session
We started on the beach, where the water in Akumal does what it always does: turns an impossible shade of turquoise and refuses to look real. Alex wore a deep wine-colored shirt with elegant white trousers, a combination that photographs beautifully against both sand and jungle. Leah wore a white cotton dress with delicate shoes, simple and elegant, the kind of outfit that moves with the environment rather than against it. Together they looked effortless, which is exactly the point.
Then we found the boat.
Half-buried in the sand at the edge of the shore, an old wooden boat, weathered and abandoned, sitting there like it had been waiting for exactly this session. We climbed in, shot from the outside, used the texture of the old wood against the softness of their outfits. It's the kind of find that you can't plan and can't replicate, the kind that only happens when you decide to explore rather than just set up in front of a nice background.
After the beach, we pushed into the jungle. Akumal's surrounding vegetation is dense and lush, all tangled roots and filtered green light, and it creates a completely different visual world from the open shoreline. In there, the session took on a different mood: quieter, more intimate, more textured. The contrast between the white of Leah's dress and the deep greens and browns of the jungle was something.
What stayed with me most from this session is how naturally Leah and Alex moved through all of it. Different environments, different light, different energy, and they just adapted. Calm the whole way through. Present with each other. Genuinely happy to be exactly where they were.
